BISD Employee Launches Autism-Friendly App

  • In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Beaumont ISD Speech Pathologist Catherine Freeman launched AuTKonnect, an app for children and families with autism.

Inspired by her daughter, who has autism, Freeman partnered with her cousin and fellow speech pathologist, Carmyn Thompson, to create a community of love, support and inclusivity through AuTKonnect.

“We wanted to help families that are on the autism journey feel like they have help and support within a click of a button,” said Freeman. “Families can connect with other families that understand exactly what they are going through.”

The app includes learning activities, resources, jobs and a feature with listings of local therapists and sensory-friendly activities and events such as vacations, sports, movie theaters, swimming programs, zoos and  theme parks delete delete Educators and therapists can connect on AuTKonnect to share ideas about classroom curriculum and activities or therapy sessions when working with children with autism.

Our purpose is to bring more autism acceptance to the Golden Triangle by having more activities and fun things for our kids,” said Freeman. “We need to promote solutions to help individuals with autism across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan.”

AuTKonnect is available on the Google Play store and Apple’s App Store.
