After retiring from the United States Navy and returning home to Beaumont, Senior Chief Dunn worked at Jefferson County State School (TYC) for 4 years as a supervisor of Juvenile Corrections Officers’ on a Chemical Dependency Dormitory. While working at TYC, he was selected employee of the month and as a finalist for employee of the year. He was hired by BISD in 2001 as a Naval Science Instructor. He taught High School Naval Science (NJROTC) for 10 years at Ozen High School. Due to Port Arthur ISD’s inability to hire a Naval Officer to take over its Naval Science Program, Senior Chief was hired because of his leadership abilities and teaching experience to take over the position as the Senior Naval Science Instructor. Because the position is normally held by a Naval officer, Port Arthur ISD requested and received a waiver from the U.S. Navy for Senior Chief Dunn, a senior enlisted, to fill the position at Memorial High School where he taught for 5 years before retiring. Senior Chief Dunn’s Ozen High School NJROTC Unit qualified for the State NJROTC Competition in College Station held at Texas A&M University, the first high school NJROTC Unit in Beaumont to do so. His Ozen High School NJROTC Unit Marksmanship team qualified and competed at the National NJROTC Marksmanship Competition held at the Naval Military Base in Millington Tennessee as one of the best NJROTC Marksmanship teams in the nation. Senior Chief continued that winning tradition at Memorial High School where his NJROTC unit qualified and competed at the State’s Marksmanship and Academic championship.
For the past 5 years, Deacon Dunn has served as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. Deacon Dunn guided Mt. Gilead leaders and led the church for 15 months on a pastoral search after the pastor retired. That leadership resulted in the election of a pastor in November 2020. He was elected as President of the Charlton-Pollard Alumni Association for three years, where he was instrumental in petitioning BISD Trustees to name the new elementary in the South End to Charlton-Pollard Elementary. He also oversaw the construction of the Charlton-Pollard High School Memorial Monument during his tenure as president. His memberships include American Legion, Dorie Miller Post 817, NAACP, Financial Secretary Appomattox Social Club, Golden Triangle Submarine Veterans and the Disable Veterans Association. He is the President of the Charlton-Pollard Class of 1970 and the First Vice President of the Charlton-Pollard Alumni Association. He is also a Youth mentor for Texas Challenge Academy where he mentored at-risked youth. The program provides structure and discipline to help cadets develop personal accountability and become successful adults. Senior Chief has always had a passion for helping children, which led him to run for and get elected as BISD At-Large Trustee.
