Say: Now let’s practice reading some longer words!

Before we read, look at the words in line 1. What is one way all the words are alike? (All have the digraph sh; all have the word part ash.) Let’s read the words in line 1 together: ash, ashes, smashing, whiplash. As children read the line, help them read longer words one syllable at a time. Encourage them to identify digraphs and tell how they decoded the words.

Continue with the other lines, providing corrective feedback as needed. Ask: What word parts did you know that helped you figure out the words? Encourage children to tell how knowing the syllable patterns gave them clues to the vowel sounds and how knowing about digraphs and word endings helped them read words.
