Mic Check: SSLC Amplifies Student Voice Across BISD

SSLC member Kassidy Holt announces on a microphone her plans after graduation.

Beaumont ISD students made their voices heard loud and clear this year. The Superintendent’s Student Leadership Council (SSLC) wrapped up its 2025–26 cohort on April 9, turning peer feedback into a powerful Student Voice Report. From mental health to academic pressure to having a say in their schools, these student leaders didn’t just talk—they mapped out solutions that could shape the district for years to come.

“Using the skills I’ve gained through SSLC, I’m able to confidently communicate with diverse groups. That skill will stay with me and apply to the real world for the rest of my life,” said Lavina Karani, a Junior at West Brook High School.

The SSLC, composed of student representatives from Beaumont United, West Brook, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Academy, spent the school year gathering feedback from their peers, identifying key concerns, and developing solutions to improve the student experience in Beaumont ISD.

During the final meeting, students reviewed their data, aligned their findings into key themes, and created a unified presentation that reflects student perspectives across the district.

The 2025–26 Student Voice Report centered around three key themes identified by students. The first, student wellbeing, highlighted a strong need for improved support systems to address mental health and overall wellness. The second, academic pressure and integrity concerns, revealed that students feel significant stress tied to grades, GPA, and performance expectations, which can impact learning behaviors. The third, student voice and representation, emphasized the need for students to feel heard, valued, and connected within their schools.

As part of the meeting, all student participants received certificates recognizing their commitment and contributions throughout the year. Select students were also honored for outstanding membership based on consistent attendance and completion of all assignments.

“These students were selected based on their leadership skills, their ability to communicate. It has been a pleasure to see these students grow, develop, and share the student voice from their campus,” said Dr. Shannon Allen, Beaumont ISD Superintendent of Schools.

The SSLC will present the 2025–26 Student Voice Report to the Beaumont ISD Board of Trustees on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the BISD Board Room. Learn more about the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Council at www.bmtisd.com/sslc.
