Communication Philosophy

The Southeast Texas Regional Day School Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SETX RDSPD) is dedicated to fostering a comprehensive and individualized communication environment where every student can thrive. Our guiding philosophy asserts that all communication modes are equally valued and supported, precisely tailored to the unique communication mode, needs, and strengths of each student who is deaf or hard of hearing. This clear framework ensures that our program delivers consistent and effective communication support to every learner.

We actively integrate and promote a diverse range of communication modalities. This includes auditory/oral approaches, with a strong emphasis on spoken English development through the consistent use of assistive listening technology and the application of Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) principles. Simultaneously, we fully support manual/visual communication modes, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Signing Exact English (SEE), along with Visual Phonics to bolster literacy and overall language acquisition. Furthermore, our philosophy embraces Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), encompassing both high-tech options like iPad apps and essential low-tech solutions such as visual schedules and communication boards. Our dedicated staff are proficient in, and deeply committed to, communicating with individual students using their preferred and most effective mode, ensuring an accessible and empowering learning journey across all facets of our program.
