BISD AI FAQ's

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is the simulation of human intelligence in machines, allowing them to learn, reason, and solve problems. It includes technologies like machine learning, where systems improve through experience, and natural language processing, which enables computers to understand and generate human language. AI is used in various applications, from chatbots and virtual assistants to self-driving cars and medical diagnosis tools.

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content, such as text, images, music, or code, based on patterns learned from existing data. It uses machine learning models, like neural networks, to generate human-like responses, realistic images, or even original creative works. Examples include ChatGPT for text generation, DALL·E for image creation, and AI music composers that produce original songs.

• Siri (Apple) – An AI-powered voice assistant that helps with tasks like setting reminders, answering questions, and controlling smart devices.

• Google Translate – Uses AI to translate text, speech, and images in real time.

• Spotify – Uses AI to recommend music based on listening habits.

• Netflix – Uses AI to suggest shows and movies based on viewing history.

• TikTok – Uses AI to personalize content recommendations based on user preferences.

• Google Photos – Uses AI for facial recognition, automatic organization, and photo enhancements.

Students need to use AI in school because it helps them develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy skills that are essential for the future workforce. Many jobs in fields like healthcare, finance, technology, and marketing already rely on AI, and understanding how to use AI tools will give students a competitive edge.

AI is becoming an essential tool for learning, research, and skill development. Rather than banning AI outright, BISD wishes to teach students how to use it responsibly for brainstorming, writing support, and critical thinking exercises.

AI detectors are not 100 percent reliable and can falsely flag human-written work as AI-generated.  AI detectors often have a bias against students whose first language is not English, as their writing may contain patterns that AI models misinterpret as machine-generated text. This can unfairly penalize students and create distrust in the evaluation process. Additionally, AI detection technology is constantly evolving, making it difficult to maintain reliable standards.

BISD teachers have access to monitoring software while students are in class.  Teachers are encouraged to use these tools to monitor and block AI usage when not appropriate.
