Phone Free in BISD
At Beaumont ISD, we believe our students deserve to learn and grow in a focused environment, free from the distractions of cell phones and social media.
Beginning with the 2025-26 school year, House Bill 1481 will go into effect statewide, requiring schools to restrict student cell phone use during the instructional day. Beaumont ISD is implementing the Yondr Program at all Middle and High School campuses to create phone-free school environments. This initiative is designed to foster increased student engagement, improved academic performance, and enhanced social interaction by minimizing digital distractions during the school day.
All students will receive an individual Yondr pouch, which will remain with them throughout the school year. The pouch will be used to securely store personal cell phones from arrival until dismissal each day.
Why Phone-Free?
Research and national health experts indicate that frequent cell phone use during the school day negatively impacts student focus, mental health, and academic outcomes.
Key Data Points
- 3+ hours of daily social media use doubles anxiety and depression risks.
- 20 minutes is the average time required to refocus after a phone distraction.
- 15 points is the average drop in math scores due to phone usage.
- 68% of students report that digital devices hinder classroom learning.
At BISD, we believe our students deserve the opportunity to thrive in a learning environment that prioritizes their success and well-being. The Yondr Program is a proactive step toward that goal.
