Guess Students Deliver Donations to UTMB Burn Unit
Guess Elementary School began a donation drive in April of 2016 for the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Burn Unit in Galveston, Texas. The students collected toiletry items (like soap, razors, deodorant) to benefit families and patients. This is the fourth year the campus has collected donations.
The Student Council, which consists of 5th grade students Angelina Martinez, Jared Harrell, Jr., Chase Bridgeman, and Jasmine Dabney, made special care packages containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and shampoo/conditioner for families. “Often, families of burn victims arrive with nothing and these care packages enable them to take care of some basic needs,” said Guess Student Council Coordinator and 5th grade teacher Holly Martin. “While I didn't have a way to accurately measure the amount of donations, we filled a huge wagon with supplies and the boxes were stacked several high. We made approximately 50 care packages for families.”
Martin and principal Dr. Debbie Oge accompanied the students to UTMB on May 28, 2016. The students dropped off donations and were given a tour of the facility.
