Beaumont ISD is continually focused on raising the achievement of our students and fostering a lifelong love of reading among them. Research shows that daily reading practice is a huge factor in developing students' vocabulary, comprehension skills and reading levels. The benefits from daily reading also extend into higher achievement levels in all other subject areas.
BISD will host a Read-a-Thon December 1 - December 31, 2017. The event promotes daily reading practice for students in grades K - 8 using digital or standard books. Students will be provided reading logs and graphic organizers to help keep track of what they have read. They are encouraged to read each day during the month of December, including during the winter break.
Every BISD student has access to thousands of engaging online digital books with audio support through the MyOn platform. They can read books on almost any electronic device (computer, smartphone, Kindle Fire, Chrome tablet, iPad, etc.)
Drawings for prizes will occur throughout December and January 2018. For every book read and the corresponding Accelerated Reader quiz passed with an 80% or better, the student's name will go into a drawing for prizes. The more books read, the more chances they have to win.
Business partners and community leaders are encouraged to donate prizes to present to our students who participate in the Read-a-Thon. Donations of gift cards up to $20 are currently being accepted, along with books, movie passes, electronic devices, bikes and more.
