FFA Students Win Big at South Texas State Fair
The Beaumont Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter recently showcased their livestock at the 2018 South Texas State Fair, March 22-25. Over 60 students participated with animal projects that some have been raising for almost a year.
The largest category for the show team were broilers, which are chickens that are raised for meat production. Central’s Timmy Carr, along with West Brook’s Keaton Humber and Erin Lindsey, each placed with their birds and sold their broilers at the Youth Livestock Auction on March 28.
For students showcasing their rabbits, West Brook’s Matthew Austin and Maiya Conner each won Best of Breed with Kit Brush winning Best of Breed and Best Rabbit of Show, which is the overall champion.
Student beef exhibitors featured their F-1 Heifers, which are young female cattle that have never been bred, and West Brook’s Cheyenne Gerald was chosen to participate in the Youth Livestock Auction on March 29.
“The Beaumont FFA Chapter had a fabulous year at the fair and far exceeded expectations. This was the most successful that any FFA program affiliated with BISD has done in many, many years,” said BISD Agricultural Education Program Director Will Humber. “We want to thank parents and family members of the exhibitors, because as many learned this year, raising an animal project is a family affair.”
Students in grades 3-12 who are interested in showing an animal next year with the Beaumont FFA Chapter must attend the mandatory parent meeting on April 17 or April 19 at 6pm at the BISD Ag Farm, located at 6150 North Keith Road in Beaumont.
