ROAR Volunteers Celebrate a Successful Year
The Beaumont ISD ROAR Community Reading Partnership recently celebrated a successful 2017-18 school year. Each elementary campus hosted an ‘End of Year Celebration’ where certificates of Achievement were handed out to 212 volunteers and 487 students that participated in the ROAR program.
The ROAR Community Reading Partnership enables 2nd grade students to receive early intervention. Volunteers were asked to spend 30 minutes a week per student. The success of the program depends not only on participation of BISD faculty and staff, but on the community as a whole. Students are paired with volunteers where they read a level-appropriate book during the half-hour session. Volunteers, who have attended specific training for the program, worked with students by asking questions to increase comprehension and help build confidence. Based on the observations of the volunteer, as well as other classroom-based metrics, the book level and difficulty increase as the student progresses.
BISD is always looking for dedicated members of our community and local businesses to work with our students. We strongly encourage and believe that community involvement is a major building block in the foundation of building a strong campus and district. The mentorship provided by our volunteers and business partners leaves a lasting impact on our students. By giving of your time, you are making a difference in a child's life and helping us to build a successful district.
