Fehl-Price Encourages Summer Reading
Fehl-Price Elementary recently kicked off a week of celebrating ‘Summer Fun with Reading’ with camps, a visit from a published author and family art projects, all to encourage reading over the summer.
Each grade had a theme like ‘Beach Fun with Books’ and ‘Camp Read is S'much Fun with S'mores’. The camps allowed students the opportunity to interact with literacy outside of the typical classroom setting. Skills were being reinforced like making an inference or reading with fluency and students could work with a reading buddy, independently read, participate in Readers' Theater or read in front of a group.
“Camp time allows students to see reading as something that is fun” said Fehl-Price curriculum coordinator Shermadiea Porter. “Students were able to build their reading confidence and skills through the week of camp adventures. Our goal is for students to want to read during the summer.”
Author Jwanda Bryant was on campus to share her story ‘Danny and the Deployer’. Students not only had the opportunity to ask questions about the book and how to become an author, but they were given books by Bryant as well.
