Vincent PTA Reading Night

In an effort to assist parents to understand the importance of literacy, the Vincent Middle School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) recently held a ‘Reading Night’ on campus. Parents had the opportunity to move through three stations where they could participate in a hands-on activity and have something to take home with them that would promote reading. “It was a fun evening that assisted our parents to understand reading and prepare their student for STAAR testing,” said Principal Missy Gimble.

Station 1 involved Chromebooks, giving parents an opportunity to use one if they had not before. They learned about the Accelerated Reader (AR) Home Connect component, Clever.com and resources that are available including MyOn and TextQuest. Parents also heard about Learning Ally which supports dyslexia and learning disabilities and Voyager which provides support in literacy and math.

A vocabulary interactive activity was at station 2 and allowed parents and students to play a vocabulary game for a prize. They also received a game that can be used as a review at home. Station 3 was a general information booth for parents to pick up packets about motivating middle school readers at home, along with lists of books for reluctant readers, Reading Strategy bookmarks and more.

Once parents and students had visited each of the stations, they were treated to a delicious Italian buffet and had a chance to win door prizes. Vincent Reading Department Chair Melissa Chapman said the PTA Reading Night is the first in a series of curriculum nights that will be held on campus.
