BISD Bus Driver Takes Top Honors … Again
Beaumont ISD bus drivers recently participated in the Southeast Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (SETAPT) School Bus Safety Road-e-o held in Lumberton. Sabrina Willis placed 1st in the transit competition and Gloria Youngblood, who is retiring after almost 35 years with the District, placed 2nd. They both will advance to the state competition in Corpus Christi.
The competition consists of two written tests and an obstacle course that includes driving a straight line, parallel parking, offset alley, diminishing clearance, stop line, student loading, railroad crossing, right turn, left turn, curb line and backup alley.
Willis started working for BISD in 2003 and has competed just about every year, advancing to the state level around 9 times! I competed in my first school bus rodeo in Anchorage Alaska in 1999 which was the first year I had my license,” said Willis. “I enjoy competing and it also sharpens my driving skills.”
Youngblood started working for BISD in 1983, competing off and on over that period of time, placing from 1st to 6th place and visiting state locations such as Corpus Christi, El Paso, Waco and McAllen. She placed 3rd in her first competition and advanced to State with only one year experience. “I have enjoyed competing in the Road-e-o and always look forward to the ‘family reunion’ atmosphere of the event,” said Youngblood. “Competition aside, there is always room for improvement of our driving skills with the emphasis on safety.”
