Nearly 40 students at Smith Middle School have passed their Federal Aviation Administration Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), certifying them to pilot a drone recreationally. Additionally, the students received training on the importance of how to handle their drones responsibly in public.
“I want our scholars to be aware of the emerging technologies and the qualifications it takes to use such technology,” said Marinette Parkerson, BISD Coordinator of STEM. “The use of drones, also known as unmanned aircraft systems, has rapidly changed over the past years, and the future opportunities in the field are limitless.”
TRUST provides education and testing for recreational drone flyers on important safety and regulatory information.
“I hope the TRUST will perhaps lead them to become 14 CFR part 107 commercial drone pilots certified once they become 16 years old,” said Parkerson.
