BU Hosts Ring Ceremony for State Champion Basketball Team

The 5A State Champions Boys Basketball Team at Beaumont United High School were presented with their hard-earned bling at a ring ceremony in their honor this week. During the celebration, the team and audience heard from various presenters about the boys' importance.

Charles Durio, Beaumont City Council Member-Ward 4, spoke about the significance of the campus and the students. “You are standing and sitting on legendary ground,” he said. “You are the future of our city. And I believe our city has a very bright future.”

Beaumont Mayor Robin Mouton read a proclamation that proclaimed March 12, 2021, as Beaumont United Day in honor of the championship and shared some heartfelt words.

“This is a special honor to stand before you,” expressed Mouton. “I am a proud graduate of the Hebert High Class of 1978. One day all of you will come back like me, and you will say I can remember when we were honored on this special day. You have so much to be proud of by being state champions.”

Diligent About Doing Something (DADS) founder Shanter Norman presented several items to commemorate the championship, including a team autographed basketball and shoe and a picture of the team that will be showcased at the school. DADS partnered with the coaches and parents and offered mentoring and counseling services to the boy's program. Norman thanked the parents, coaches and boys for the opportunity to work with the young men.

“We built a cohesive unit and the championship is the outcome of it,” stated Norman. “Thank you for being Diligent About Doing Something.”

On March 12 in San Antonio, they defeated Dallas Kimball with a 71 to 70 overtime victory! The Timberwolves had an amazing season with a 31 game winning streak and no losses. They were the only undefeated boys team in the state playoffs. The Timberwolves are ranked second in Class 5A, second in Region 3, seventh in Texas and 26th in the nation! This is the school’s first state title game in only their third season.

Beaumont United went on to become state champions in three years of being in existence as a high school. Students from Ozen and Central High Schools were merged to create the school. Head Coach David Greene expressed how the team was able to succeed.

“It had been 20 years since Beaumont won a basketball championship,” said Greene. “We have one of the most awesome staff and we don’t give up on our kids. We love our kids. What I love about our kids is not only are they great athletes, they are students. They come to work and get good grades. In the last three years of existence, we have played 100 games and lost only 10. You guys have enriched my life.”

One by one, the team and student trainers walked across the stage to receive their special gifts and immediately placed the shiny jewelry on their fingers. Congratulations once again to the BU State Champions Boys Basketball team.
