Smith Cleans Up the Neighborhood
Phalen Leadership Academy at Smith Middle School conducted a Trash-Off on September 18, 2021, picking up 350 pounds of waste in the neighborhood surrounding the campus.
Smith Lead Counselor Juanda Bryant proposed the idea for families and the school to come together for a greater cause. “I want students to give back by starting with their community,” she said. “It is the goal of the school to implement one service project a month, so this was a great start.”
Masks, gloves, trash bags and water bottles were distributed to all volunteers. Students, teachers and several Lamar University organizations such as Relentless Cru, Collegiate 100, Omega Psi Phi, Young Successful Males, Sigma Gamma Rho, Alphi Phi Alpha, and Beaumont Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta contributed to the event, along with Issacc Mouton, owner of Spindletop Cruisers.
“The goal is for our scholars to engage in service projects,” said Bryant. “We not only cleaned up our neighborhood, but the event also served as a great example for students to learn how to better serve their community.”
