18+ Students Team Up with a Harlem Globetrotter
While volunteering at the Southeast Texas Food Bank, the Beaumont ISD 18+ Adult Transition program had a pleasant surprise when they had the chance to learn some basketball moves from Sweet Lou II of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Ambassadors for the Globetrotters visit communities in advance of an upcoming game. “We knew about the devastating effects from Tropical Storm Imelda in Beaumont and wanted to make a difference,” said Harlem Globetrotter Publicist Chasity Edwards. “Sweet Lou was able to help prepare meals and have some basketball fun.”
Students learned a few tricks and enjoyed the unique experience while serving at the food bank, which they do quite often.
“The 18+ group is one we really depend upon. They do a lot of work at the food bank and seem to enjoy their time with us,” said Southeast Food Bank Volunteer Support Specialist Susan Detweiler. “I can always count on smiles when I see them, hugs too.”
The Harlem Globetrotters are also hosting a food drive to benefit the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Anyone that brings canned food items to the show on February 17 at Ford Park will receive a percentage off their ticket.
