Update: Jones-Clark to Remain Closed until Wed., Sept 25th and Thurs., Sept 26th.

Dear Beaumont Families,

As we have seen, Texas weather can be unpredictable and conditions can change in a split second. Many of you may still be dealing with the repercussions of the 17+ inches of rainfall in the Beaumont area and surrounding communities. We must say, the safety of our scholars, staff, and families is paramount; and we are here for you. We are Texas Strong.

At this point, you should have received an automated communication from our campus principals indicating the school closures at both Jones-Clark Elementary School and Smith Middle School. After assessing the damages caused by tropical storm Imelda, both PLA schools will remain closed through early next week. Staff will return on Wednesday, September 25th and scholars will return on Thursday, September 26th. If anything should change, we will inform you via our parent communications system.

Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) works hard to make decisions that put our scholars first. We think about our scholars of all ages who may walk, ride the bus, or drive to school. We also, remember that many of our scholars travel from other district areas for school. We take into consideration missed instruction time, the hardship a school cancellation places on our families who may need childcare or scholars who may need a hot meal at school. There are those same considerations for our staff and their families.

The decision whether or not to close school is complex and never taken lightly. The process begins the night before. As the PLA Regional Director/Superintendent, I consult with local weather forecasting services, other nearby districts, and local law enforcement agencies throughout the night. In some instances, in the early morning hours, local personnel drive the roads before a decision is made. Whenever it is appropriate to do so, we speak with local area superintendents to coordinate our efforts if conditions are impacting children from across various districts.

Although, we do our  absolute best in this process, I know that often no perfect decision exists. If, based on current weather and flood conditions, you do not feel as though it is safe for your child to attend school, use your best judgement on whether he or she should attend.

We are all saddened to learn of some of the hardships with flood waters entering homes, damaging structures, and rescue efforts occurring across the city. However, we stand together and are Texas Strong! We will stay united in our efforts of safety and rebuilding our community. Thank you for being a part of the PLA at Jones-Clark family. Please reach out to any of us if you have questions/concerns or need any assistance.

Good wishes, always,

Alain Frankiewicz, PLA Regional Director
