Campuses Assist with Hurricane Laura Relief Efforts
Several student groups, parents and staff stepped up to offer assistance to those in need after Hurricane Laura hit close to home.
The Beaumont United (BU) Student Council hosted a Disaster Relief Supply Drive. “The purpose of this drive was to get the BU community to come together to help our neighbors,” said Energy and Environment Committee Chairperson McKayla Rawlins. “Within the past few years, BU has been impacted by multiple natural disasters, and the community came together when we were in need of donations and assistance. It was time for us to pay it forward, and return the same generosity.” Student Council members traveled to West Orange-Stark High School on September 15 to drop off four large boxes of supplies and cleaning items.
The BU Golden Girls drill team also collected items that will be donated to another area impacted by the storm.
West Brook cheerleaders and STARS drill team members took extra classes at Dance Attitudes with proceeds used to cover the costs of replacing dance items for studios that were affected in Lake Charles. Additionally, parent Lisa Kethley was able to utilize her husband’s bus to take donations to Louisiana.
West Brook chemistry teacher Paula Chastain had four trees on her home and her garage was flattened by several of the neighbors' trees. Fellow teachers Dan Van Pelt, Amanda Bell, Peter Adams and Jose Rendon headed to Lake Charles to help. “The science department were troopers,” said Chastain. “All worked to exhaustion, which is all we could ask of anyone.”
Team members at Regina-Howell Elementary were on hand to volunteer for World Central Kitchen which utilized the campus cafeteria to prepare meals for people impacted by Hurricane Laura.
