BU Partners with Food Bank for School Tools Distribution
Members of the Beaumont United (BU) High School Student Council partnered with the Southeast Texas Food Bank to assist with their drive-thru School Tools distribution for teachers.
The School Tools program provides school supplies to elementary schools in Southeast Texas with a large percentage of low-income students. The free store allows teachers to access the supplies once a month during the school year and distribute them to the children whose families cannot provide them.
While the store has been closed to the public due to COVID-19, Mary Simon, Food Bank Children’s Program Coordinator, organized a drive-thru so teachers could pick up needed supplies. With such an undertaking, Simon reached out to BU Principal Dr. Charisma Popillion for assistance and the student council set out to help.
“The BU students went above and beyond all day,” said Simon. “They provided excellent customer service at 18 stations, where they handed out supplies, picked up trash and broke down boxes.”
BU Student Activities Director Chantel Douglas, teacher LaNisha McKinney and Homer Drive Principal Dr. Belinda George were also on hand to help direct close to 300 cars.
“My prayers were answered through awesome leadership and phenomenal, invaluable volunteers,” said Simon. “What an amazingly beautiful and blessed day to let our teachers know they are loved and appreciated.”
