ECHS Collaborates with Industry Partners for Mock Interview Event
Early College High School hosted a mock interview event where twelfth-grade students prepared a resume and practiced their interview skills to gain feedback as they plan for their future.
Business and industry partners committed at least two hours to the event. Students had the opportunity to visit with representatives from Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT), Goodyear, Turner Industries, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas, BASF, Junior Achievement and Beaumont ISD.
“Our plan is to ensure that all of our seniors have experienced at least one professional interview to prepare them for next steps,” said ECHS Principal, Melanie Pharis.
Marketable skills such as teamwork, decision making, conflict resolution, collaboration, resume writing, dressing for success and relatable experiences were exhibited at the event by students. Interviewers also shared their own lessons learned from real job interviews.
“The staff at ECHS was welcoming, the event ran smoothly and students were hungry to learn,” said Turner Industries Training Development Manager Glenn Massey. “It was a good way for local industry to put their hand in a young community and help them be better prepared.”
Pharis said students were excited about the opportunity and what the experience could do to contribute toward their growth. “The volunteers enjoyed getting to meet the seniors and offer guidance based on their own expertise with the hiring process,” said Pharis.
"It was an honor to help this great group of seniors navigate what can be a really scary proposition, facing down their first job interview,” said LIT speech instructor Joshua Cobb. “I think today's practice will go a long way toward instilling confidence in an already competent Class of 2021 at ECHS."
