Martin Explores Interests During Passion Block

Every Friday, Martin Elementary students set aside their schedule for two hours to explore their interests and focus on a passion.

Students are paired with teachers that share the same excitement about a topic and are broken up into groups,” said Angela Derry, Assistant Principal. “Right now, you can see them work on music, STEM, robotics, cooking, sewing, fashion design, graphic design, computer science and more.”

Passion Block was built to be an incentive for students to show up everyday, have good conduct and achieve academically.

“Attendance is one of our main focuses, as well as behavior and grades, and Passion Block encourages that,” said Derry. “The students were really excited about it and looked forward to it. We want to get them really motivated about coming to school. We also saw this as an opportunity to build relationships between our students and our teachers.”

In addition to Martin staff, guests rotate in to host a passion block activity. Beaumont United football players and coaching staff attended to share about leadership and athletics.

“Passion Block allows for more investment into the Martin Elementary campus, while also focusing on individual student learning needs and the whole child being represented," said Anetra Cheatham, Chief Innovation Officer.
