Doing Something Grand for Grandparents

Elementary campuses across the District invited grandparents to visit their grandchildren with luncheons and activities surrounding Grandparents’ Day, which is annually recognized on September 10. 

Grandparents play an invaluable role in the lives of their grandchildren. The recognition day is a great way to show appreciation for the love and support they provide. It also promotes intergenerational bonding and the sharing of wisdom across generations. 

While the majority of campuses hosted a luncheon on September 8, Martin Elementary encouraged grandparents to make and design a loving craft on September 12 during the P.E. classes. 

“Grandparents are the solid foundation to many of our families and households. Their presence is always so loving and nurturing,” said principal Kareem Nelson. “We decided to host a craft activity to allow a small moment for the students and their grandparents to connect while creating.” 

At Marshall Middle School, grandparents were invited to have breakfast with their students provided by the PTA and business partner Mabel’s Snow Cones. Tyronna Williams from the Foster Grandparent Program spoke about getting involved in the education of their grandchildren and ways to volunteer. 

“We surprised our very own Foster Grandmother Yi Chen Brazier with a plaque for her 13 years of service here at Marshall. She started volunteering in 2010 with (Superintendent) Dr. Shannon Allen,” said parent liaison Brittany Ducote. “She was so surprised! We even had a visit from (Beaumont) Mayor Roy West. This event turned out to be amazing. All of our grandparents received a 100 Grand candy bar.”

Suggested ideas to do outside of the official recognition day include reading a book together, taking a walk, sharing stories, cooking a meal, hosting a virtual lunch date and volunteering together.
