Vincent sixth-grader Paxton Collins was named a winner of the Southeast Texas Food Bank T-Shirt Design Contest and was recognized at the unveiling of the food bank’s newest facility on September 8, 2023, Hunger Action Day.
The contest began earlier this year and was open to all elementary school students through fifth-grade in the eight counties served by the food bank, including Jefferson.
Collins, then a fifth-grader at Martin Elementary, was announced as one of the winners and was surprised at his campus last spring. He was then invited to attend the September event at the Food Bank to announce and show off the winning shirt design, along with the new building.
Harvey Zernial, Southeast Texas Food Bank President/CEO, said the contest was sent out to all elementary schools in Jefferson County and they received approximately 70 entries.
“Our first annual contest was a huge success. Our goal originally was to choose one winner to go on our shirts for the month of September, but that proved to be a challenge for us as they were all so good,” said Zernial. “We chose three winners: Front Shirt Design, Back Shirt Design and Staff Shirt Design.”
Collins’ design was chosen for the back of the t-shirt.
Proceeds from shirt sales will support September's Hunger Action Month and benefit the food bank’s mission. Collins received a shirt with his design, a $100 Main Event gift card and a gift bag full of treats.
