All Talk: SSLC and STAC Offer Valuable Feedback to Superintendent
They had questions. Dr. Allen had answers. The Superintendent’s Student Leadership Council and Superintendent's Teacher Advisory Committee participated in the first of three sessions for the 2023-24 school year on October 30 and November 1, 2023, respectively, with both gatherings offering productive discussions among student leaders, teachers, and BISD administrators.
The SSLC consists of middle and high school student organization leaders, as well as girls and boys selected by their school principals. The STAC is composed of 2023 campus Teachers Of the Year.
SSLC members began their half-day session with introductions, an icebreaker, and a presentation from BISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Shannon Allen. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of BISD leaders which included Associate Superintendent Elementary Administration Dr. Anita Frank, Assistant Superintendent Secondary Administration Anetra Cheatham, and Executive Director of Human Resources Derwin Samuels.
At their meeting, STAC members received a District update, board outcome goals, information on attendance trends, and had the opportunity to tell the Superintendent what can be done to make the work experience better. Some of those answers included providing more training for teachers, ensuring that teacher duties are completely necessary, and providing more incentives to teachers with exemplary attendance.
The SSLC will meet again Monday, January 29, 2024. The next session for STAC is not yet confirmed.
