Striking A Chord In Education

It’s not the same old “song and dance” when it comes to music education in Beaumont ISD and a state music educators organization has taken notice. The Texas Music Educators Association has named BISD Superintendent Dr. Shannon Allen as a Distinguished Administrator.

The TMEA Distinguished Administrator Award recognizes school administrators whose support has been critical to the music program successes in schools across the state. TMEA has recognized more than 400 deserving administrators through this program.

In nominating Allen for the honor, Michael Murdoch, Beaumont ISD Director Of Fine Arts, made note of Allen’s personal connection to the arts as a member of the West Brook High School band when she was a Bruin student. “She knows firsthand how impactful the arts can be on the lives of students,” he shared.

Announced at the May 16, 2024 BISD Board Meeting, the Superintendent was presented with a framed cover of “Southwestern Musician Magazine,” along with the article in which the distinction is featured. “As you can see, I was floored by this nomination and this recognition,” Allen expressed with great surprise. “We have a phenomenal team. Under Mr. Murdoch’s leadership —he has done a phenomenal job. Fine arts is a passion of mine.”

“Dr. Allen actively engages with students, teachers and community members. Her exemplary leadership and passion for the arts make her a true champion of fine arts programs throughout our city,” Murdoch added.
