Student representatives from Beaumont ISD middle and high schools sampled new food products with BISD cabinet members and their fellow peers at the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council meeting on October 25.
The BISD Child Nutrition Department conducts product samplings with students in different grade levels at various times during the school year to survey acceptability and preferences for the breakfast and lunch menus. Items were presented at the meeting that are new on the menu this year, in addition to products that are being considered to add next year. Students were able to survey foods in the breakfast menu, fruits, vegetables, desserts and numerous lunch entree items. New products on the menu this year include fruit, yogurt and granola parfaits and a few entree salads. “Our students are valued and we strive to not only offer foods that meet the USDA Guidelines but are also acceptable to our student population,” said BISD Director of Child Nutrition Tiffany Eckenrod.
Council members were excited to represent their campus and try proposed foods. Paul Brown Center students Brandon Howard and Michael White both expressed that they enjoyed the experience and were proud to play a part of the decision-making process in selecting foods to be placed on school menus. "The presentation was excellent. I hope everyone's feedback is favorable and positive changes are made to some of the breakfast and lunch options,” said Early College High School (ECHS) junior and class president Jaiden Hicks.
