Medical Magnet Nursing Students Graduate from LIT
Eleven students in the Medical Magnet Program are the first from Beaumont United High School to graduate from the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) Nurse Aide Certification Institutional Award program. They met the graduation criteria and participated in the LIT graduation ceremony on December 14.
Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) curriculum includes both hands-on experience at healthcare facilities and basic biology and health coursework with an emphasis on areas such as safety regulations, CPR, infection control and patient care. The classes include communication, recording vital signs, personal hygiene and basic nutrition.
The Nurse Aide program is offered as a dual credit course and stipulates that students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and maintain an 80 or above average in all courses. The requirements for LIT graduation are completion of the mandated four program credits to include lecture and lab courses as well as 100 hours of hands-on clinical experience at a healthcare facility.
Graduates are now eligible to take the State of Texas CNA Examination in February. Upon passing the exam, students' names are added to the CNA State Registry. Ten additional Medical Magnet seniors are currently finishing up their Pharmacy Technician courses and will graduate upon their completion in April.
“It is a great accomplishment and I am so proud of each student,” said Medical Magnet teacher Lovette Martin-Davis. “I want to thank every professional educator (elementary & secondary) who equipped them with the academics they needed to flourish in the Medical Magnet Program. They laid the foundation and continued to build upon it.” The program also thanks principal Ron Jackson and Director of Career and Technical Education Dr. Donna Prudhomme for ensuring they had the resources and equipment needed.
