College Students Teach at Dishman
Lamar University students are gaining hands-on experience working with children at Dishman Elementary. In addition to lectures, spending time in a real classroom helps them understand what it’s really like to be a teacher.
Elementary education majors visited Jill Harper’s fifth-grade art class in November to teach lessons about artist Pablo Picasso. They wanted students to focus on Picasso's color and mood at various stages of his artwork, such as the blue and rose periods. Students used shaving cream with liquid watercolor to create a marble effect on paper. Afterward, they applied a small silhouette to the project with words printed on it that expressed their mood.
“I am pleased to allow Lamar students come to my classroom and teach their prepared lessons,” said Harper. “They enjoyed the project and were happy with the end results. It is always a pleasure to have Lamar visit Dishman.” Student teachers are under the direction of Lamar Art Education Professor Dr. Joanna Hyatt.
