Manpower Makes a Difference
Guess Elementary invited male role models to make a positive impact through reading and volunteering with their “Cowboys for Kids” program.
The volunteers assist with the morning/afternoon car line, cafeteria and hallway monitoring, field trips, morning greetings and more. “The response has been good as a dozen men have already signed up,” said parent engagement coordinator Janis Pokraka. “We also encourage our men to make time for their student and eat lunch with them.”
Kevin Courville, Reicco Joubert, Edward Pitre and Lester Volrie are program volunteers that hope to lead by example the importance of a positive male figure in a child’s life. Principal Dr. Debbie Oge said they have already made an impact by volunteering at the campus carnival and in daily Guess activities.
Oge said she enjoyed watching her "Cowboys for Kids" volunteers as they interacted with students. “I could not determine who was having more fun, the dads or the students,” said Oge. “Our program gives volunteers the opportunity to be actively involved with students. Everyone walks away feeling a greater sense of self worth. Our parents are very important and we encourage their involvement.”
