When Fletcher Elementary parents picked up their children from school on August 30, they also received a gift of fresh food from the Dream Center. In an initiative from the campus business partner, bags of various produce including carrots, squash, apples, beets and cabbage will be handed out to over 250 families each month.
Principal Gloria Guillory said a food distribution idea for her campus had been brewing for a couple of years, but the resources and manpower had not made it possible. “This year, when I met with Vilma Conner, director at the Dream Center, she said that they receive a lot of produce from the Southeast Texas Food Bank and she wanted to make sure that all families received fresh food at least once a month,” said Guillory
The Dream Center has an international network that participates in Adopt-A-Block Outreaches. “Here in Southeast Texas we took it a step further and did an Adopt-A-School outreach with Fletcher Elementary,” said Conner. “We were made aware of possible food insecurities within the demographics around the campus and wanted to help some of the families with their food costs by giving them produce to help offset grocery expenses.”
“We are thrilled that the Dream Center has agreed to make this happen once a month,” said Guillory. “This is such a blessing to our students and their families.”
