Academics for Life (AFL) students geared up for the Babe Zaharias Relays, the annual area-wide special needs track meet.
“We look forward to the relays every year,” said AFL Specialist Jamie Price. “They practice at school so they are prepared when the starter says ‘on your mark, get set, go.’”
The YMBL hosts the event increase socialization, community involvement, self-esteem and communication skills among special needs students while competing in a familiar track event.
“The relays rewarding because kids throughout southeast Texas make new friends and lasting relationships,” said Price. “Parents come out and cheer for all the students--some express tears of joy to see their child so happy.“
Adaptive PE teachers coordinated accommodations for all sporting events to ensure all students are involved.
“My favorite part is seeing the smiles and excitement on the students’ faces,” said Price. “We are already looking forward to next year.”
