Students Download Skills at YLSET Conference

Beaumont United, Early College, Paul Brown and West Brook students attended the Youth Leadership Southeast Texas (YLSET) Conference at Lamar Institute of Technology.

Campus representatives were chosen for the class of 2019-20 after being nominated by a teacher and passing an administrator interview.

“We look for students who demonstrate qualities such as great work ethic, pride in their school community, dedication and enthusiasm,” said West Brook faculty sponsor Amy Rubin. “They are seen by both their teachers and peers as natural leaders.”

At the conference, students met members from 21 southeast Texas high schools. They learned five key leadership skills: community (team building), empathy, others before self (service), reflection (thinking and acting critically) and journey (planning).

“The purpose of the conference is to give students an introduction into what skills make great leaders and organizations successful,” said YLSET Chairman Dr. Dwaine Augustine. “We encourage the students to put these skills into practice through experiential learning, the community service project.”

“Our mission is to develop leaders, not just serve students who have ‘natural’ leadership abilities.”
