Wyman Inspires Marshall Students
Former NFL player Devin Wyman inspired Marshall Middle School seventh and eighth graders to make positive decisions. The 6’8”, 335-pound football star bent an iron rod with his head, and shared his story about perseverance and overcoming challenges.
Before Wyman was drafted to play with the New England Patriots in 1996, he was arrested and spent time in jail on drug-related charges. He now spends his time with the Winning Edge, providing comprehensive support to address the needs of all those involved in the education and care of this generation.
“Today’s schools face multiple challenges for students, teachers and staff. My goal is to motivate students to believe in their dreams,” said Wyman. “I strive to encourage those who are struggling.”
“I hope those attending the presentation will be encouraged not just for themselves, but for their community,” said Wyman. “Struggles are a part of life, we just need to find a balance. You are not born a winner and you are not born a loser; you are born a chooser.”
Christian Fellowship’s Pastor Rick White, who invited Wyman to the school, said Wyman connects very well with students. “He encourages them to be aware of their mistakes and how to make a change,” said White. “Devin talked about choosing the right types of friends. It’s important to stick with those that boost your self-esteem.”
As part of the session, each student received a response card, which were collected and read by administrators who look for any red flags like depression, self-harm and suicidal or violent thoughts.
“Our students were inspired by Devin’s presentation,” said Principal Nicholas Phillips. “It’s important to start making the right choices now because even the smallest poor choice can have a huge effect on our future."
