Beaumont Chamber Hosts Eighth-Grade Leaders
The Leadership Beaumont Youth Committee welcomed eighth-graders from each BISD middle school to Lamar University for their annual Youth Leadership Program.
“The goals and objectives of the eighth-grade program are to build self-esteem through participation and accomplishment, focus on leadership skills and define leadership qualities, provide an opportunity for middle school students to network with students from other campuses, inspire students to seek advanced education and provide information about career options,” said Haley Bruyn, Beaumont Chamber of Commerce Director of Communications and Marketing in a release.
The students participated with area eighth-graders in interactive sessions where they create a leadership name and learn what “color” they represent by their personality and style of leadership. Group and team building activities throughout the day continue to emphasize the different leadership style techniques and how we must understand to communicate with each type.
The students then received a campus tour, attended a career assessment session and participated in activities focusing on communication and leadership skills and principles.
“These students are the future of Beaumont and we are so thankful to the Chamber and Lamar University for partnering with us in equipping them with the skills to become successful leaders,” said Executive Director of Secondary Schools Randall Maxwell.
The students learned about student organizations and the importance of involvement to learn leadership skills for future growth. Parents were also invited to attend the closing of the day to hear a recap of the day’s events and learn about college admission and career assessment initiatives.
