BISD Hosts First Witzzle Pro Tournament
Fourth and fifth graders, as well as middle school students, challenged each other in the District Witzzle Pro Tournament.
“We want to offer many options for our students to excel,” said Curriculum and Instruction Executive Director Jenny Angelo. “It’s exciting to bring a math element to compliment our spelling bee and UIL competitions.”
Witzzle Pro is a mind-sharpening and fun number game designed by amateur mathematician Louis Sher. The object of the game is to find ways of using three numbers in any row, column or diagonal of a 3 x 3 square of numbers to achieve a target number (from -12 to 36) using the four basic arithmetic operations. Witzzle Pro comes with 40 playing cards each printed with a unique grid of nine numbers and specially designed dice used for achieving the target number.
“Witzzle Pro reinforces numerical fluency and number sense,” said Elementary Math Supervisor Sheree Will. “The tournament provided an opportunity for our kids to get excited about math.”
Middle school students competed by grade level using a process of elimination. “Different students excel in different subjects,” said Secondary Mathematics Supervisor Elizabeth Whitley. “We were excited to host this tournament and hope to continue each year.”
