A Message from Dr. Allen

BISD Family,

As we close out the 2019-20 school year, I want to thank each of you for your perseverance and dedication to the students in our schools. No one anticipated such a radical ending to the school year after our fantastic start. I have truly learned the value of teamwork during this time of global crisis and depended on our families that have faced many unexpected insecurities during the last several months to take on the additional role of teacher.

At the onset of this crisis, we rapidly transitioned our operations to create a remote learning environment.  While we worked steadily, creating this experience to close out the school year was not without challenges. Lack of resources and equitable opportunities for a percentage of our students were highlighted throughout the last several weeks. I would like to truly thank our parents as you endeavored to educate your students in the best methods available. Thank you for your patience and support throughout the last 47 days.

I know that everyone is anxiously awaiting news of the 2020-21 school year and the impact on Beaumont ISD. With the future still uncertain, I can assure you we are working on plans for a redesigned school year. In fact, we have a transition committee established that is focused solely on this unique challenge. The committee is comprised of several subcommittees that will study each impacted area:

  • Academics will review schedules, instructional time, diagnostic assessments, curriculum and accountability.

  • School Operations will review and prepare to revamp day to day operations such as feeding students, health accommodations, transportation and other operations.

  • Distance Learning will review the current district needs and revise protocols for virtual learning.

  • Whole Child will consider students' social, emotional and behavioral needs as a result of COVID-19 as well as additional protocols that must be adopted to meet the needs of all students.

  • Employee Protocols will work to revise and revamp district expectations under COVID-19 implications and social distancing.

Each subcommittee is working under the premise of planning for various scenarios in the fall with social distancing enforced.  Plans will more than likely dictate a hybrid scenario where students will spend a portion of the week in face-to-face sessions at school and a portion of the week participating in remote learning experiences. We anticipate the possibility that parents may be able to choose to have their students participate in learning remotely on a full-time basis. Parents should also expect possible changes to the 2020-21 school year calendar.

This is a pressing challenge as our focus and commitment is to ensure that our students and staff are safe and that we provide a quality educational experience. Our committees are studying and reviewing every option carefully to reach the best plan for our students. In collaboration with the Texas Education Agency as well as other local and state agencies, we are making the best plans to meet the needs of BISD.

I truly hope that we can return to a traditional learning environment next fall; however, we recognize that our entire nation is transitioning to a new normal. It is prudent for us to prepare for that new normal. Your feedback from this year’s work and next year’s planning is a driving force in our decisions. Watch for an opportunity to participate in a Thoughtexchange survey to share your ideas and provide input as we plan for the fall. Expect to hear from us throughout this summer as plans are finalized. Stay connected through our website and social media platforms. Please continue to remain safe and I hope to see you soon.

Best Regards,

Dr. Shannon Allen
